Eligibility Criteria
Education and work Experience
Candidates must meet the following education and work experience requirements. Internships do not count toward FM experience.

Ethics Requirment
An Ethics Assessment is required for all CFM credential applicants. Those holding the CFM credential are required to complete an Ethics Assessment every other renewal cycle or every six (6) years. Candidates have an option of two current Ethics Assessments which have been approved by the
Certification Commission. If a candidate’s employer requires an Ethics training/ assessment, and the training meets the requirements of the International Ethics Standards Coalition (IESC), the program can be submitted, along with the Ethics Submission Form, for approval and applied towards the Ethics requirement. All Ethics Assessments can be used towards maintenance activities for the recertification form. See the table on the following page detailing the options for satisfying the Ethics Requirement. Candidates have up to 30 days from the date on which they pass the exam to complete the Ethics Requirement and submit the required documentation. Any individual who does not complete the Ethics requirement and submit the required documentation to the CAMP record will have the status of the CFM credential moved to inactive and will not be in good standing. Candidates are notified and reminded of the requirement in the email received upon passing the CFM exam and again the week
prior to the 30-day period.

The CFM program includes a thorough exam that evaluates your proficiency in key facilities management areas. 1. Meet Eligibility Requirements
Ensure you have the right combination of education and work experience relevant to facility management. Check the detailed eligibility criteria on the IFMA website to confirm. Typically, this requires a mix of formal education and years of professional experience. Make sure all your qualifications are documented and ready for submission.
2. Prepare for the CFM Exam
It’s important to prepare thoroughly before applying for the CFM exam. A variety of study materials, courses, and practice exams are available to help. You’ll need to be well-versed in the core areas of facility management. Once your application is approved, you’ll have 90 days to take the exam, so plan your preparation accordingly.
3. Complete the CFM Exam Application
Submit your application through the IFMA Credential Application and Maintenance Program (CAMP) portal. If you don’t already have an IFMA account, create one to access the application. Be sure to review all details carefully to ensure accurate submission. Make use of available resources to avoid mistakes during the process.
4. Submit the Application and Payment

5. Approval/Denial of Application
It can take up to 21 days to get a decision on your application. If approved, you will be notified to schedule your exam. In the case of a denial, your payment will be refunded. Make sure your documentation is complete and accurate to avoid delays in approval.
6. Exam Scheduling
Once your application is approved, you have 90 days to schedule your exam. Use the available online portal to choose a date that works for you. If you need more time, you can request an extension for an additional fee of $50. It’s best to schedule early to ensure availability at your preferred location.
7. Sitting for the Exam
Arrive at the exam center at the scheduled time and follow all the guidelines provided by IFMA. Be sure to bring any required identification and materials. The exam environment will be standardized, so review the procedures beforehand for a smooth experience.
8. Comply with Exam Administration Requirements
Within 30 days of passing the CFM exam, you must complete Ethics Training to finalize your credential. This ensures you meet IFMA’s standards of professional integrity. Some applications may be subject to an audit for additional verification, so keep all documents on hand.
9. Obtain Certificate
After passing the exam and completing Ethics Training, you will receive your official CFM certificate. This document validates your expertise in facility management and is recognized across the industry. It will be sent to you electronically or by mail, depending on your selection.
10. Recertification
To maintain your CFM status, you are required to recertify every three years. This process ensures that your knowledge and skills remain up-to-date with industry standards. IFMA provides detailed instructions on how to earn recertification credits through continued education and professional activities.
